Year 2

Welcome to Year 2. On this page you will find lots of information about the structure of your child’s day, routines and home learning. For more detailed information about what we will be learning through our topic work, please click on the topic page links below.

A Day in the Life of Year 2

We begin every day with a whole school worship, which is the followed by our SuperSonic Phonics Friends phonics lesson, we then move onto our Maths lesson. After a playtime, we then have an English lesson (which incorporates spellings, reading and writing skills). In the afternoon, the children are taught lessons which link to our topic – these may include lessons such as music, geography and history. In Year 2, the children still have an afternoon playtime and we end every day with a whole class story time.

Home Learning

Each week we expect the children to complete three homework tasks. We ask them to:

1) read their school phonics reading book every school night but at least four times a week

2) to spend at least 20 minutes a week on Numbots or Times Table Rock Stars

3) to learn their weekly spellings.

We also send home a termly optional homework sheet which contains six optional homework tasks linked to their topic.

PE

The children have two PE lessons a week;  Monday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. Please make sure your child’s PE kit stays in school all week as we sometimes have to swap our PE sessions.

If you have any questions about life in Year 2, or more specific questions about your child and their learning, please feel free to pop in at the end of the day. We are always happy to help!
