Richard, our Ancient Egyptian host took us on a journey of the ancient kings of Egypt before pharaohs.
We learnt how King Khufu united the two kingdoms of Egypt and was not a kind ruler. Together we built the Great Pyramid of Giza, we now know how many bricks it took and how heavy they were and why it was once covered in polished limestone. Finally, we discovered the secret chambers hidden within the pyramid and how the robbers stole the treasures of the king.
Once our grand pyramid was built, we began the mummification of King Khufu, removing organs and placing them in canopic jars. Every great king needed shabtis, so we created our own, complete with a spell from the ‘Book of the Dead’ to bring them to life and continue to serve the king. These were written on papyrus paper using the reed from a papyrus plant and powder from a crushed stone!
Eventually, the time came to send the king to the afterlife. We learnt how ancient Egyptian’s hearts were weighed against a feather to see if they had lived a good life… or how to cheat your way into the afterlife with a spell!
